In this Introducing Commodities lesson, we look at the two main types of commodities, the factors that influence their price, and how we trade them.

There are two main types of commodities – soft, and hard. Soft commodities tend to be agricultural products like livestock, wheat, sugarcane, and dairy. Hard commodities on the other hand, are typically natural resources that are mined or extracted, like coal, silver, and natural gas.

Economic and political events, natural disasters, and even the weather can influence their price. The US dollar also has a big influence on commodity prices, making them changeable.

There are several ways to trade commodities, and it all depends on what type of trader you are. In order to trade different types of commodities, we use different exchanges. Big commodity changes include NYMEX, the CME and LIFFE.
