Continuing from Part One, Gautam Gurnani goes on to share his experience of working in an Investment Bank, and what made him switch sides from an advisory position to an executory position. Gautam spills beans on what working in the investments space looks like.
Right out of IIM Bangalore, Gautam found himself working in Goldman Sachs, when the worst place one could be in was an investment bank. It was the Global Financial Crisis of 2008, when all hell had broken loose, and the bullish lead up to it, came crashing down to levels unprecedented in 80 years.
Gautam had been working bailing out several European banks out of the Eurozone crisis, at the same time seeing his colleagues and seniors getting fired.
The first deal he got to work on was for the Dutch bank, ING where he helped get them a bailout of $10 Millions from the Dutch government, and somehow the most fascinating aspect of it remained how he had to jump out of his apartment balcony in London to reach the meeting on time.
Whether it was his grit or fear of the times, but he managed to keep his job amidst all the layoffs. He later learned that Goldman never intended to layoff fresh joiners as they were insignificant in the system still.
Having done this for close to 8 years, Gautam felt like it was time to move on. Finding the execution of roles fancier and more exciting, than advising clients, he joined Dubai Holding to get his hands dirty.
He shares his experience of working with an Investment holding company as opposed to a bank, the kind of deals that happen, the investments he makes like hotels all across Europe, and theme parks in Dubai.
